I was hoping to rewatch the original before watching the remake so I could get a real apples to apples comparison, but a spontaneous decision for some popcorn and to spend time in a large dark room with 50 or so people we don't know threw a monkey wrench into that plan. Overall I think it was a really good remake. Definitely scarier than the original. I've always said that if you put creepy little girls, people that stare at you and don't answer you when you talk to them, and just tons of "make you jump" scenes in a movie it would be a hit and this movie has all of that. As far as remaking classic horror movies and making them better, the difference in quality is probably on par with Texas Chainsaw. (5/6/2010)
Positives: They left some of the classic scenes from the original like the girl getting thrown to the ceiling and the girl in the bathtub, but improved upon them a slightly. There aren't really any points that you can relax b/c you never know when someone is awake or not. I could see how some people would get irritated with this however.
Negatives: I didn't care for the appearance of Freddy. When they showed him close up I felt like he resembled a mouse. Like a human mouse. I can't remember which movie, maybe Chronicles of Narnia, but there is a mouse with human characteristics and I feel like if you throw and red striped sweater and a hat on that, you'd get the new Freddy. Didn't really care for the teenagers acting.
Spoiler (highlight to read): I kind of liked the angle they were going with making the parents out to have murdered Freddy not truly knowing if he was really guilty. And that's why Freddy is so pissed b/c all the children lied and got him killed. But, it turns out that Freddy just wanted them to remember more so he becomes more powerful I guess. (end)
