Appaloosa

Oddly enough, this a great buddy pic. It's not really a great film per se, but the buddy aspect of it is fantastic and a joy to watch. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen play peacekeepers in the old west. Basically, they're sheriffs for hire who are brought to Appaloosa because law and order have gotten out of hand. The chemistry between the two leads is astounding. They're behavior and dialog relay a deep relationship developed over a very long time. (3/18/2009)
Positives: Thankfully the love triangle hinted at doesn't materialize and we're spared the indignity of such predictable drivel. But they still hinted at it, so I won't give them too much credit.
Negatives: The story felt very uneven and was rather uninteresting.

Initially thought that this could have been the best western I've seen since Unforgiven (1992), but the story became just too predictable in the end. Star studded cast, though questionable cast selection. But the characters themselves were raw, gritty, and believable. Ed Harris played virgil Cole, the new marshall of Appaloosa hired to bring the law back to this small town. Jeremy Irons played his great rival, Bragg, but his accent was terrible. Viggo (Hitch) was Cole's deputy and narrator of the movie. Directed by Ed Harris, there were some very spotty editing moments, but overall a pretty solid job. You could definitely feel that life out in the west was tough, and people were willing to die for pride. (8/11/2009)
