Arrested Development

(Season 3, Episode 1) The best comedy on TV right now. I swear (and the characters do too...literally) that this is a flawless series. I'm late to the party and haven't seen more than 10 episodes but I like what I see. First of all the cast is perfect. I wouldn't recast a single one of them. Jason Bateman is back (although I wonder if he was ever "here"). No one really stands out in my mind but it's just a really well-rounded cast that is given a great script every week. The 2005 season premier was a perfect example with the countless dirty jokes and innuendos. I couldn't believe the stuff they were getting away with. Two more things I really like about the show are the fake coming attractions and the absence of a laugh track. It took me a few episodes to realize the coming attractions were fake (although they are part of the series continuity). Laugh tracks can often ruin a good show. This one works great without one. Positives: Ron Howard narrates the show. Can you believe that? It just boggles my mind.
Negatives: Fox almost canceled it.

Season 1: The last great American sitcom?! I must admit, I was one of those non-believers who knew it was on Sunday Fox (2004), but chose not to watch it because it looked retarted. If you watch the promos, you might agree with me. I mean, it looked just like any other disfunctional family series. And cares about "a story of a wealthy family who lost everything and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together"? It required many recommendations from friends, lost bets, and a drunken/immobile state to get me to sit through the first episode. I was hooked. The humor extends through so many levels, that you'll consider it sheer genius at times. Tremendous cast of characters too. Interviews have said that little to no adlibbing was done, however. It would've been great if the entire show was. (10/9/2006)

Wow, I can’t believe it has taken me this long to watch this show. I also can’t believe this show isn’t still on. (Of course this is only Season 1, perhaps the quality dies off in the next two seasons). But honestly, this show is almost on the same level as Seinfeld and Curb. It’s one of those shows that has several hilarious situations that come together in the end to make the overall storyline funny. There’s humor that will slap you in your face and then some humor that is a little more subtle and may take a few minutes or episodes to realize the genius to it. (9/12/2009)
Positives: I can’t say enough about the acting. Great characters played perfectly. I don’t think there is one person I would have cast differently. And each character has their unique, quirky things that make them stand out in each episode, but yet no one seems to really steal the spotlight. Great guest appearances too, Liza Minelli, Carl Weathers, Julia Louis Dryfess, Amy Phoeler, the Fonz, etc. Not to mention Ron Howard as the narrator. Dialogue, storyline, acting…all great.
Negatives: Can’t think of one negative about this show.
