The Art of a Beautiful Game by Chris Ballard

"The Art of a Beautiful Game: The Thinking Fan's Tour of the NBA" was a fantastic read. I love articles and books about the mechanics of the games we watch and play. Ballard says it best when he describes interviewing athletes - run of the mill questions will get you stock, boring responses but delving into the nitty gritty of how they play the game will entice them to really open up. Lebron, specifically, will talk in great detail about jab steps and seemingly unimportant nuances of the game. The book is chalk full of these discussions with each chapter focused on a different aspect of the game (rebounding, defense, blocks, point guards, big men, shooting, dunking). (4/26/2010)
Positives: Although a reprint from the magazine, the "Hoops Whisperer" chapter was a great read. I'd love to go through one of those workouts. Besides that, I really enjoyed the Battier chapter.
Negatives: The book could have been much longer. A few things were missing - a chapter on the brain, a specific chapter on passing (the Nash chapter was an overview of playing the point), coaching.
