While technically not a Miyazaki written/directed film, you can see his fingerprints all over The Cat Returns. He did produce this Studio Ghibli film that's a loosely related sequel to the sole fantasy scene from the drama Whispers of the Heart. In that scene, a girl writes a story about a mysterious cat statue named the Baron. In The Cat Returns, the main character Haru starts having problems with cats so she seeks out the Baron for help. I didn't think I'd like this film because of Miyazaki's reduced role but I couldn't have been more wrong. Two words: Cat Kingdom. That's enough to tell you this film is heavily reliant on a fantasy world. (3/3/2010)
Positives: Ghibli films are always funny but this one took it up a notch. Great banter between Muta and Toto.
