Conan the Barbarian

Somehow this slipped through the cracks between Clash of the Titans and Beastmaster for me when I was a kid, and I finally sat and watched it in a proper setting (bracketed by death metal and enjoyed w/ a few beers).

I was surprised at how good Arnie was as Conan - I always figured he was kind of a dumbass back then, but I think that was the product of years of hearing goofy one-liners. Anyway, this movie holds up pretty well for a 30 yr old flick, with some nice gore and nudity to sweeten the pot. James Earl Jones is a satisfyingly creepy villain, who avoids the cheesy cackles and moustache-twittering as the stoic and imposing Thulsa Doom. There's something really charming about this one that I can't quite put my finger on. Very enjoyable. (5/28/2010)

Positives: The giant snake stuff actually looked pretty damn good! Overall the effects were much better than I expected.
