I love it when a movie sets out to do something and it completely succeeds. Kevin Smith set out to make us laugh our rear ends off and the 5 of us (family fun day!) had a great time. As with any comedy, your own enjoyment will depend on many factors. For me, the trifecta was Kevin Smith humor (albeit, toned down since he didn't write the film), an homage to Beverly Hills Cop, and Tracy Jord...err...I mean Morgan. As huge 30 Rock fans, our love of the Tracy Jordan character was a huge factor in our enjoyment of Cop Out. In addition, I've always loved the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies and Cop Out respectfully spoofs the 80s cop movie vibe right down to the synthesized soundtrack. (2/28/2010)
Positives: Seann William Scott was fantastic. In addition to this film, Role Models was also very funny. After a post-Stiffler career nosedive (Dude, Where's My Car, Dukes of Hazzard), I think he's coming around.
Negatives: If it wasn't for Jordan and Scott, this movie would have fallen to a 2.5 or 3. Bruce Willis simply isn't funny. He's more naturally funny as John McClane than he is here, forcing the punchlines. The rival cop team (Adam Brody and Kevin Pollak) was completely and utterly unfunny.
