Gears of War

Gears of War is a game that came out about 2 years ago for Xbox360. I've been wanting to play it for sometime and finally got around to it during x-mas break. The premise is that the earth has been taken over by these aliens called locusts. It's up to you and your squad to accomplish the missions and send these things back to where they came from. It's similar to a halo type of game, but done in the 3rd person perspective. If you like war-like games and shooters, then this will definitely be enjoyable. (1/30/2009)
Positives: Surprisingly, the storyline was really well done. The character development with yourself and your squad was also top notch. You hear your team talking to each other through a lot of the game and it really helps you get into it. There's lots of swearing and blood and gore - notice that I put this in the positives column. One of the key things in these types of games is the button configuration and I was really pleased with the way things were laid out with Gears of War. This was a unique type of game in the fact that they really force you to use "cover" in order to stay alive. Basically you're pressing A button to dive and duck from cover to cover as you advance through the game. It was annoying at first, but ended up helping add to the realism of the game. Tough end boss!
Negatives: Another thing that was unique about this game is that just by resting, you could increase your health. I don't think this is entirely a negative because it was nice to not have to search around for health packs or whatever, but i think it took away from the game and may have made it easier than it should have been.

Coop was very fun the first time around. Played it on the toughest difficulty, and got our asses handed to us. Particularly the final boss. The game was a bit short, however, and the gameplay though innovative, felt a little 1 dimensional. The same strategy of 'cover-shoot-cover-shoot' got boring. I recall the AI being smarter than the average joe which is a plus. (2/9/2009)
Negatives: Replay value low. Never could get into the multiplayer. These days, the online experience of a game makes or breaks the title.
