Moon is a low budget independent science fiction film starring Sam Rockwell as a worker who monitors a mining operation on the moon. He's two weeks away from returning to Earth at the end of his contract when .... I can't say any more. You'll have to be very patient with the first act of the film since it's slowly paced and Sam Rockwell is the only actor on the screen. But your patience will pay off with a very interesting story arc. At a tight 97 minutes, it's a compact story that gives Rockwell a chance to shine in a very difficult role. (2/16/2010)
Positives: Simple special effects that look great. Moon and District 9 show you don't need to spend $200 million to create a solid sci-fi genre flick.
Negatives: A potential drawback is the voice of Kevin Spacey as Sam's robotic assistant. While I didn't mind hearing his voice in this particular film, celebrity voiceover cameos are typically very distracting.

Sam Rockwell's one man band on the moon story is a pretty interesting take on extreme isolation that becomes something quite a bit stranger. Stuck on the moon for a three yr "contract" operating a helium 3 mining facility with only a robot with Kevin Spacey's voice to keep you company? Brutal. Finding another you just before you're ready to get the hell home? Looney Tunes. It's amazing how much better the no-budget, small scale sci-fi stuff can be - no highbrow effects to distract you - just an interesting, naked story. What a novel concept. (4/5/2010)
