Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Basically Harry Potter meets Clash of the Titans. However, I have not seen any of the Harry Potter movies, but I get the gist and I think this is right along those lines. I do think that I will enjoy the Percy Jackson series more than the Potter series just based on the fact it centers around Greek mythology vs wizards and magic. This movie does a great job of introducing the viewer (majority will be kids) to the Greek world. I think Hercules (the Disney animated movie, not Kevin Sorbo's Smash hit TV series) is the #1 choice for exposing kids to that world, which is why it's one of my favorites, but this is still a solid backup choice. Positives: They did a pretty good job of getting all the classic Greek gods and creatures into the movie without feeling like they were forcing it on you. I was also surprised to see some big names in the movie (Brosnon, Thurman). Hopefully there will be future installments just like the potter series. Some of the visuals were pretty cool, others didn't come across so well.
Negatives: I haven't read the book (assuming this is based off a book), but I got the feeling at parts that they didn't portray the book as well as the Potter series may have or LOTR did. I think there could have been more explaining between settings. The scene to scene transitions seemed a bit choppy at times. Also, there were some gay moments where people were just paused starring at each other for no reason.
Spoiler (highlight to read): I loved that they had the Minotaur, furrey, medusa, the hydra, centaurs, satyrs, not to mention the greek gods and godesses. However, you never got a true sense of who sent the Minotaur or the Furrey, or why Medusa wanted the lightning rod...for herself, for Hades, etc. Plus I'm not too keen on the killing of Medusa and hyrda. I mean, these creatures have been around for thousands of years and a teenager (although one of the more powerful demigods) kills them relatively easily? I was surprised that they didn't encorporate the sirens into the movie. I thought that when they went to vegas there would be three showgirls that sing and dance and entrance them into staying, but the lotuses worked I guess. (end)
