Seven Pounds

Will Smith's 2008-09 holiday film was Seven Pounds (I swear his films are released like clockwork on July 4th and on Thanksgiving or Xmas). If you're a sucker for Will Smith films like I am, you'll surely appreciate his performance. I wasn't a huge Pursuit of Happyness fan (same director has Seven Pounds) and I didn't feel much emotion watching it but this film is on another level. Watching films that run that gamut of human emotions is a valuable experience for me and this one really tugs at the heartstrings. It's an immensely sad drama about an emotionally broken man. Watching his attempt at redemption slowly play out is very intriguing as you try and understand why he hates himself so much. (1/26/2009)
Positives: Rosario Dawson's character felt extremely real and natural. Without a strong performance by her, you lose the emotional impact of the film.
Negatives: I felt that nuggets from his past should have been used more frequently. There were a number of instances where I expected a certain sound effect followed by a flashback. Guess I've been watching too much LOST.

Negatives: I saw this movie before Christmas with the Bigg Kidd, but it was such a revolting experience that I couldn't bring myself to review it until now. Along with Batman and Robin, it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theater. The only reason I'm posting this review is out of fear that some of you might read Deuce "Fresh Prince is in my hero" Gort's review and actually go see this movie. The entire review will be in the negative column because I've never come so close to walking out on a movie. There is NOTHING redeeming about this movie, me and Larr almost came to blows walking out of theatre over anger about this movie. Seven Pounds, more like seven years to life for whoever greenlit this utter crap. I'm getting angry just thinking about how bad this movie was. It makes Cloverfield look like Citizen Kane. Do not see this movie. DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE!

For some reason I had in my mind that this was a lame movie. I’m guessing it was all psychological and that I thought it had something to do with the British currency. That led me down the path to think of other british movies. And for the most part I think British stuff is lame. (See this week’s episode of “Condensation” – that’s not fog Johnny…it’s condensation. Anyway, thankfully I am friends with Burt Mearle. I’m sure all of us have said that to ourselves in one way or another. A simple “Wow, you haven’t seen Seven Pounds yet?” and needless to say it was next in the queue in a matter of moments. Ahhh…right, what exactly is the movie about? Well, it’s hard to describe without giving certain aspects of the movie away. The best I could say is that Will Smith befriends Rosario Dawson and helps out with some chores around the house. So if that doesn’t grab you, then just go with the fact that Burt Mearle endorses this movie. (9/12/2009)
Positives: Great storyline. I also gotta give Will a lot of credit b/c I felt like he really go into the character. He always looked so tired and strung out. It’s like they only filmed the movie after he was awake for 24 hours. And for Dave, it’s one of those movie that makes you think and may make you question certain things about yourself.
Negatives: No real negative other than the fact that I kinda figured out what was going on too early into the movie. So then I just spent the rest of the movie waiting to see if I was right.
