I took a day off from work because I need to have my car checked and I felt I needed some time off. During that time, I thought to myself "Hey, my car's getting fixed, why not watch Transformers". It's just as good now as it ever was. They don't make cartoons like this anymore. This was the bridge between the first two seasons of the cartoon series and introduced everyone to Galvitron, Cyclonis, etc. A classic in my mind in terms of childhood nostalgia. (5/5/2006)
Positives: Good voiceover work. Apparently this was Orson Welles' last movies. I guess James Earl Jones wasn't in the budget. There's actually a chapter in the movie called "The Swear" where Spike (the human father) says "Oh ####!". The first time I watched the DVD, I was cracking up.
Negatives: Not enough Starscream

In my mind I kept thinking that Transformers 1 and 2 wasn’t as good as the cartoon movie. So I had to re-watch it and see if I was right. It is probably close between Transformers 1 and this movie, but this one is definitely better than 2. I think if you ask the average non-transformer fan who saw the 2 latest movies to name a transformer other than bumble-bee, Prime, or Megatron, they would have a tough time. But with the cartoon, they give you more of a feel that it wasn’t just about Prime. It may be that there are several new transformers introduced in this movie and that they need to say there names several times to get it to stick in peoples’ minds. I know it worked for me…I think I ended up with at least 4 of the new transformers. Anyway, I bring it up b/c I feel like the viewer was abel to connect more and had a better idea of what was going on in the cartoon than either of the movies. (9/12/2009)
Positives: Everything you loved about the cartoon, except in movie form. Awesome guest voices. Also, I will add this. See spoiler.
Negatives: Not as great as I remembered, but still nostalgic nonetheless. Also, what was up with always having to have music in the background? In some scenes it was kind of distracting, especially when the tempo of the song didn’t really fit what was happening. Only exception is at the end when they break out into “you’ve got the touch….you’re got the power….” That was about as sweet as it gets.
Spoiler (highlight to read): I’m not sure which came first, Transformers the movie or GI Joe the movie, but aren’t the storyline’s pretty similar? Both have the new cast of characters (good and bad). Both have the hot shot showoff who thinks he’s he can save the day but ends up getting his friends killed or wounded, just to end up saving the day for real at the end. Both have the new outside presence (Cobra La and Uni-cron). Both have the new girl character that likes the hot show-off. Both have the jazzed up new theme song. Both have the show-off going on a quest that makes him realize his leadership qualities are hidden by his flashiness and selfishness. The 2nd in command takes over, just to have the main bad guy return and transform them into something else (dust or snake). Both have the character that speaks in rhymes. The list goes on…. (end)
