2012

No better or worse than Emmerich's last disaster epic (The Day After Tomorrow), 2012 is carried by mindblowing effects for a good chunk of the movie. But eventually things have to stop exploding and crumbling and that's where the movie drags, propped up by what is essentially a weak network miniseries plot. Cusack is a personal fave, and Ejiofor is a nice actor, but the characters are pretty interchangeable. Only Woody Harrelson's conspiracy hippy was memorable as far as the attempts at humor go, and I liked his and Cusack's brief exchanges. Worth seeing on the big screen? Probably, but you could also leave 40 min early and not miss anything. Better than Transformers 2 at least. (11/24/2009)
